Welcome to the balloon board project wiki.
This wiki supports cooperation in software and hardware related to the balloon board project. The balloon board project is a Open Hardware project that ... who, what, when, where, why, how, ...
So far the balloon board project has produced several versions of the "balloon board". The "balloon board" is a "computing module" (it runs Linux) particularly suitable for battery-powered devices, wearable computing, low-power instrument monitoring, robotic control and other projects needing physically small, lightweight (<30g), low-power(<1W), high-performance computing.
Key pages
an introduction to the balloon board The latest boards are Balloon 3.0 which use a Intel XScale PXA270 processor (max: 520Mhz) and up to 256 MB RAM. ... lots of I/O, including USB peripheral port (so it can be connected to a desktop PC) and USB host ports (so cameras, etc. can be plugged into the balloon board), LCD interface, stereo audio input and output, ... .
BalloonPics balloon pictures has photos of Balloon 3.0 boards and earlier boards.
All schematic, logic and design details are publically available and anyone can build boards under the OpenHardwareLicense : the current draft of "The Balloon Open Hardware License (BOHL)" we are discussing. We hope this will become a good, general-purpose license for all kinds of open hardware. (You can make your own boards. However, to keep costs down, we encourage people to cooperate to design a very flexible PCB board, and buy large-ish quantities of it, rather than making lots of slightly-different balloon-a-likes.)
ExpansionConnector (is this where "Balloon add-on boards" connect?) This wiki is also intended to collect information on Balloon add-on boards released under similar Open Hardware licenses.
